Health Issues Linked to Mold Exposure

Health Issues and Mold Exposure. At the forefront of this company, Mold Zero isn’t about cleaning the home for aesthetic or resale values, we are about family health and safety first. After experiencing our own health scare with toxic molds, we founded this company as an easier, quicker, and above all safer method of mold removal.

What is Mold?

Molds are various types of fungi that grow in filaments and reproduce by forming spores. The term mildew is often used to refer to certain types of mold, particularly indoor mold with a white/grayish color or mold growing in shower stalls and bathrooms.

Molds produce irritating substances that may act as allergens in sensitive individuals. Some molds even produce toxic substances known as mycotoxins, which can have detrimental health risks.

Allergic reactions are the most common health effect of mold, which may happen immediately or develop after a period of time following exposure.

Both growing mold and mold spores may lead to allergic reactions.

Symptoms and signs of mold allergy include:

  • sneezing
  • runny nose
  • coughing
  • wheezing
  • watery eyes
  • itchy eyes
  • redness in the eyes
  • skin irritation or rash

The Black Mold

The “black mold” Stachybotrys (as well as a few other types) produces toxins known as mycotoxins that can cause irritation of the skin and airways in susceptible individuals.

Symptoms of severe reactions include fever and difficulty breathing. People with compromised immune systems or those with chronic lung disease can develop serious infections in their lungs due to mold infestation.

In 2004, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) found sufficient evidence to link indoor exposure to mold with upper respiratory tract symptoms, coughing and wheezing in otherwise healthy people.

Mold was also linked to the worsening of asthma symptoms in people who have asthma. Additionally, mold was reported to have a connection with hypersensitivity pneumonitis in individuals susceptible to this immunologic condition.

This uncommon disease is similar to pneumonia and can develop in susceptible individuals after brief or prolonged exposure to mold.
