Health Issues Linked to Effects Of Mold

There are many health issues linked to effects of mold. Mold isn’t just gross—it’s dangerous for your health.

Molds produce irritating substances that may act as allergens in sensitive individuals.

There are some molds that produce toxic substances known as mycotoxins.

The presence of mold, even a mold that is capable of producing toxins, does not always imply it’s being produced.

Mold may not cause any health effects, or it may lead to symptoms in people (adults and children) who are sensitive to molds.

Allergic reactions are the most common health effect of mold.

They may happen immediately or develop after a period of time following exposure. Both growing mold and mold spores may lead to allergic reactions.

Symptoms and signs of mold allergy include:

  • sneezing
  • runny nose
  • coughing
  • wheezing
  • watery eyes
  • itchy eyes
  • redness in the eyes
  • skin irritation or rash

Even in some nonallergic individuals, mold can irritate the eyes, skin, and airways.

The “black mold” Stachybotrys (as well as a few other types) produces toxins known as mycotoxins that can cause irritation of the skin and airways in susceptible individuals.
